About The Farm

Trenearla Blackface Sheep

Trenearla is the hill section of our farm rising to 1900 feet.  Grazing is predominantly heather and it makes up part of the Comeragh Mountain Range.  One thousand Lanark ( or South Type) Scotch black face ewes are run for the production of quality Lanark and mule breeding stock.  Our on-farm auction takes place in September of each year.

Trenearla Blackface Sheep

Three generations of my family have farmed hill sheep on this farm and one of my ambitions was always to improve and develop the flock.  70% of the land is High Mountain grazing. Lanark sheep were introduced in the mid nineties and have proven to be extremely vigorous and prolific, producing in excess of 1.5 lambs per ewe annually. The ewes are easy to maintain and are superb mothers. Male lambs are sold from September to Christmas at forty five kgs plus. Lanark ewes on the farm also produce premium mule ewe lambs crossed on selected blue Leicester sires.

In Scotland, Lanark sheep have fast become the dominant Scotch Blackface breed and are the choice on most hill sheep farms. Also, in Northern Ireland, the breed has become increasingly popular. Our business continues to promote the breed in Ireland

Visiting Sheep Farmer...

"Having travelled some distance to see the stock we were impressed with the quality of the sheep and also the enthusiasm and the hospitality we received from the family."

Regular Customer...

"The farm sale is run with integrity in a very efficient manner from sorting to penning and handling . Last year was our fourth year there and the ewes we bought did well and weren't overly expensive. We crossed them on texel. They had a great lamb crop and the lambs were lovely. We enjoy the day out and are always treated well. "

Stock Specialist ...

"The healthy appearance of the sheep is the first thing to grab your attention . The body and conformation of the animals is noticable . The factory data sheet from a batch of male lambs recently sold reflects this on grading and weight and seems on a par with lowland flock breeds in this regard. The lambing precentage per ewe is also impressive for a hill flock. These lambs finish easily. The Lanarks on this farm are a beautiful sheep to look at. I love the colour of the faces and the texture of the wool. The level of recording on bloodlines and flock information is to be commended. "

Neighbouring Hill Sheep Farmer...

"Buying rams from theTreanarla flock has really improved my hill ewes and lambs. I would not use any other hill breed now."

Northern Lanark Breeder...

"There are not many Lanark flocks in Scotland at the top end( where one might expect to go to acquire a breeders tup ) where so many sheep catch your eye as here."
